Welcome: Visions to Reconnect Our World

Updated: Mar 18, 2022

Welcome to my art journal!

Thank you for joining me here. I hope that this journal can be a meaningful and inspiring way for me to share with you a bit of my world as a bioregional artist.

Bioregional art

My work is inspired by the land. I grew up on one of California's last pristine estuaries, in the small coastal town of Los Osos situated on the Southern end of Morro Bay. The Morro Bay estuary is a haven of diverse life in the peaceful embrace of the Pacific coast's gentle climate. The land of the sand – Los Osos is situated atop 5,000 year-old stabilized sand dune formations, and it is still guarded by a wall of actively shifting dunes which shield the estuary from the ever-present Northwest swell. Here in the valley of the bears we are sheltered by coast live oak woodlands and the sweet fragrance of California sagebrush.

It is my experience that the land makes us who we are. Our bodies are literally grown of the bodies of our relatives, the plants and animals. Our thoughts are echoes of the hills, woodlands, meadows, and seascapes which hold us. Our hearts are vessels woven of the life which surrounds us. As a society we have drifted from our roots of direct connection to the landscape, although this connection is not gone entirely – and my work as an artist is to tend and rekindle that spark of relationship.

Visions of the future

I have been an artist since the beginning of my memory, and my life has been a journey of learning what that really means. Artists are carriers of visions, planting seeds which will one day grow into the future world that will surround and sustain us, just as the visions of the past surround and sustain us now. Artists are the blacksmiths who tend to the mechanisms of the heart. I consider it an honor and a sacred responsibility to be one such storyteller, and I hope that you will enjoy joining me to explore my visions, which are rooted in the land, both from the past and into the future.
